Kanpur Dam Overview

Kanpur Dam is a dam on the Haru River near the Potwar Plateau in Tasir Kanpur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan. It is about 50 kilometers away from Islamabad. It forms Lake Kanpur, a reservoir that supplies drinking water to Islamabad and Rawalpindi and irrigates many agricultural and industrial areas around the city. It is 167 feet (51 meters) high and has a water storage capacity of 79,980 acre feet.

At a short distance from the Kanpur Dam, there are several Buddhist sites that attract the attention of locals and foreign tourists every year.

Khanpur Dam

Bamara Buddhist Temple Complex
Carvings and heads dating back to the 2nd to 5th centuries were discovered in the excavations of a stupa called Bamala Buddhist Temple near Kanpur. During the excavations, valuable coins of the Kushan period were also found around the stupa. The ancient site of Bamara was designated as a National and World Heritage Site near the Kanpur Dam. The ruins date back to the 4th century BC. Stupa is cruciform and resembles an Aztec pyramid.

Rajghan Mosque
Known as ‘Rajun Ki Masjid’ (officially Rajgan Masjid), this dilapidated mosque is believed to be over 100 years old. Currently, it is only used for Eid prayers as people use the new mosque built in the nearby area for daily prayers. The large prayer hall and worn brick work needs to be restored.
